England & Wales QLTS Scheme
Another advantage of joining the Friarylaw American Bar Programme is the ability to take the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme for England and Wales. The QLTS the fast-track route for New York Lawyers to qualify as English solicitors without a practice experience requirement.
How does it Work?
Step 1. Successfully complete the Friarylaw NYB Programme
Upon successfully passing the New York Bar Exams, Friarylaw candidates are then admitted as Attorneys and Counsellors-at-Law in Good Standing at the Bar of the State of New York
Step 2. Apply to the Solicitors Regulatory Authority for QLTS Certificate of Eligibility.
The Certificate of Eligibility simply confirms that you are entitled to practise law in your home jurisdiction and have no criminal record, disciplinary actions or other issues related to your background. There is no internship or experience requirement to complete. You only need to be a Qualified Lawyer in a Recognised Jurisdiction, and satisfy the English language requirement. A fee of £200 or £400 (depending if you are an International Lawyer or EEA, UK or Swiss lawyer), is payable to the Law Society for processing the application.
Step 3. Sit (and pass) the QLTS exams.
The full range of skills required to practise English law are tested on the QLTS, including oral, written and professional. For more information, visit www.sra.org.uk
Step 4. Enrol as a Solicitor of England and Wales
Once you have passed the assessments and fulfilled any outstanding requirements set by the SRA, you may apply for admission to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales and get your practising certificate.
