Friarylaw NYB Alumni

For over 11 years, Friarylaw has been sending its successful graduates, now qualified as Attorneys-at-Law to the most internationally recognised and prestigious law firms in the United States and indeed internationally. All Friarylaw Candidates enjoy automatic membership to Friarylaw’s Alumni Exchange, our own on-line social networking website. To see where just some of our successful candidates have deployed their American Bar qualifications, as a complement to their Irish (and elsewhere) legal studies come meet with the Friarylaw Team at our Head Office in Dublin.

Global Opportunities Beyond the United States

It is important to realise that those qualified as lawyers in the New York and/or California State Bars often use their qualification for practice outside the United States. Many American lawyers and European lawyers with American qualifications are engaged in the European offices of US law firms, Anglo-American firms and local European civil law firms engaged in trans-national business. These centres include London, Brussels, Luxemburg, Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Berlin, Frankfurt, The Hague, Madrid and other European regional centres. Opportunities also arise for graduates of the Attorney-at-Law Programme in Australia, the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Lebanon) the Far East (Hong Kong, China and Singapore) and further afield. Other opportunities exist for those who qualify as attorneys in such areas as management consultancy, financial services, international arbitration, international human rights, international aviation, international oil and gas, international insurance and assurance houses, the international trade divisions of the large accountancy firms, and outside the orthodoxy of legal practice generally, etc.

Further, with the increasing dominance in recent years of the English language and the Common Law in trans-national commerce, there now is a steadily increasing demand amongst non-US law firms in European centres for dual qualified lawyers who are professionally qualified in the States.

Those candidates who acquire this qualification will enjoy full rights of practice in New York and/or California unrestricted on grounds of nationality or residence. Successful candidates will enjoy ad hoc rights of appearance in other US States. Often successful candidates will work in European centres in their capacity as U.S. Attorneys. Further, Friarylaw alumni who have qualified as New York Attorneys have, for example, availed of the New South Wales QLTT to work as Australian lawyers in Sydney.

Returning to Ireland with International Legal Experience

Finally, even in these times, the salaries available to successful candidates are often a multiple of what is available to Irish lawyers from law firms locally. Friarylaw alumni will often return to Ireland with the personal and professional development of having worked internationally and are highly prized for this experience, adding value to the quality of local Irish legal services.
